How I Came to the United States

Moving to the United States in 1980
I had my first child, daughter, Melissa, born on July 24, 1979. In October of 1980, my husband, a US Army Seargent, had orders to move to the United States. We arrived at the Fort Stewart, GA, army airfield and I was about 8 months pregnant with my second daughter. I had a nosebleed as I stepped out of the airplane at the airfield and the air seemed very humid. Also, I was very big at that time. Soon we got housing off base in a townhouse in Hinesville, GA. Sabrina was born in an army hospital at the Fort Stewart army base (Melissa was born in a German hospital in Ruit, Germany) on April 12, 1981. We lived here for about 1 year and then my husband got orders to move to Panama, Republic of Panama.

Early Days in Germany
How We Wound Up Separated
This is really the second time I came to live in America but stayed for good this time. I had three daughters by an Army Seargent and we had separated and I went to Germany, leaving Panama, where his last duty station had been.

Financial Reasons for Reconciliation
So my husband decided it was time to stop our separation and came to Germany to pick all 4 of us up. My daughters were still little at the time and it was around 1985. My oldest daughter was maybe 6, the middle one was 3 and the youngest one was 1 year old. The reason he came to get us is because he couldn't afford the child support which is what I learned later.

Catching a Hop Flight in Frankfurt
So we had to go to the Frankfurt Army airfield to catch a hop flight with an Army transport plane. We waited for 3 days at the Army airfield and had to sleep on the floor. This was difficult with 3 small daughters. Then we got on the list for a plane, a C130 and we had to pay just a small fee. I think we were going to land in Charleston, South Carolina. I don't remember the flight from Frankfurt to South Carolina and I just remember the interior of the plane. To me, this is very strange. It might have had to do with me being so busy with children.

My husband had his car in Charleston so it was just a sports car and all 4 of us had to squeeze in there. After many hours of documentation with the Army, we were going to drive to TN. Driving on the interstate I was wide awake looking at the scenery from the airport to Clarksville, TN. After a while, I noticed that my husband who was driving had fallen asleep at the wheel and I had to wake him up or we would have surely crashed.

Later I learned that my husband had to pay for a car that he crashed in Panama and the new sports model he was driving then and he could not afford to pay support.

More later.
